Championing Indigenous Communities 

We’ve teamed up with Easy Jose Coffee Roasters on a special edition bag of coffee, grown by the Indigenous Mayni community in the Peruvian Amazon. For both Cool Earth and Easy Jose, we share the same belief that the most effective way to combat deforestation is to directly support those living there.

For Easy Jose, they work with and support the Mayni community, who harvest coffee beans beneath the Amazon rainforest canopy. Different from the way farmers traditionally cultivate coffee today, which is often destructive to the natural landscape, the Mayni community uses an alternative coffee growing method. Each bean is carefully handpicked and subjected to a fully washed process. There’s no need for “slash and burn,” also known as deforestation, which is sadly what many coffee producers still do.

At Cool Earth, we support Indigenous peoples living in rainforests to fund projects that address the root cause of deforestation: poverty. Many of the communities we partner with have also invested their resources into coffee production, leading to significant successes and a secure income source for the community. By creating sustainable incomes for Indigenous communities, this can help stop the need to sell rainforest as a last resort for much-needed cash.

Indigenous peoples and local communities have lived in balance with the rainforest for thousands of years and are the real rainforest conservation experts. The most effective way to combat deforestation is to directly support those living there, who protect and defend the rainforest on a daily basis.

Cutting through greenwashing

At Cool Earth, we’ve long maintained that carbon offsetting is a flawed approach. While many marketing buzzwords confuse consumers, quite often products are purchased based on a belief they have a positive impact – yet have very little impact at all.

The path forward isn’t through offsetting or greenwashing, but through genuine commitment to reducing emissions and supporting communities on the frontlines of climate change. It’s time for a new era of corporate climate responsibility – one based on real action and demonstrable impact.
