Peru’s Congress just pushed through a brutal new law targeting NGOs, Indigenous groups, and human rights defenders.
This isn’t just red tape, it’s a full-on attack on the people fighting to protect human rights, land, and the Amazon.
As a charity that works in Peru and supports Indigenous communities, Cool Earth has witnessed firsthand the crucial role that NGOs play in protecting the rainforest and standing up for human rights.
What’s Going On?
Peru’s new law hands the government sweeping control over NGOs. Every bit of international funding will need government approval, meaning officials get to decide which projects move forward and which don’t.
Even worse, it bans NGOs from helping with legal action against the government, even in cases of human rights abuses. Any organisation that refuses to comply could be hit with massive fines or even shut down completely.
NGOs play a crucial role in supporting Indigenous rights in Peru.
Why This Is a Disaster
NGOs like Cool Earth aren’t just organisations, they’re lifelines. They help Indigenous communities defend their land, protect the Amazon from destruction, and challenge corruption.
If Peru’s new law goes ahead, NGOs will lose one of their most powerful tools: the ability to hold the government accountable. Without legal support, Indigenous groups and local communities will be left to fight for their rights alone.
The Ashaninka Indigenous people are one of two Indigenous groups that Cool Earth supports in the Peruvian Amazon.
Cool Earth’s Commitment & What You Can Do
As an NGO that has been working in Peru for over 17 years, Cool Earth is monitoring the situation closely and will continue to fight for rainforest protection and support Indigenous communities. We refuse to let this law silence those on the frontlines of climate action and human rights.
But we can’t do this without your support. Donate now and let’s keep protecting the Amazon and the people protecting it.
